2022 Markham Vineyards - The Altruist (750ml)
Markham Vineyards traces back to a stone cellar built in St. Helena in 1879 by pioneering vintner Jean Laurent, which became the heart of Markham when the winery took its current name in 1977. Merlot has long been the estate's flagship variety, farmed sustainably across roughly 260 acres under winemaker Kimberlee Nicholls. The Altruist bottling honors that history in a different way, named for and dedicated to people in the community who quietly work to help others.
The Altruist is a right-bank style Bordeaux blend built entirely from Napa Valley fruit, with Merlot providing the juicy, velvety core. Cabernet Sauvignon brings weight and structure, a small amount of Cabernet Franc lends floral lift, and dashes of Malbec and Petit Verdot round out the color and palate. After blending, the wine ages about fifteen months in a mix of French and American oak, which builds toward its opulent, toasty character.
The wine opens with cherry and plum jam, layered with cola, vanilla, and toast, plus a hint of sandalwood and licorice. Persistent tannins and a plush mouthfeel carry through to a spiced finish. Pour it with herb-roasted turkey, wild rice stuffing, or a sharp aged cheese plate.
