Ex Post Facto is winemaker Greg Brewer's departure from the Burgundian focus of his flagship label, Brewer-Clifton, where he has spent decades crafting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Sta. Rita Hills. The name borrows from the legal term for a law applied retroactively, a nod to Brewer stepping outside his usual style to explore Rhône varieties, drawing on Syrah experience that dates back to 1993.

This Syrah comes from Perilune Vineyard, a cool-climate site within the Sta. Rita Hills known for producing Rhône varieties with real tension and savory character. The grapes are fermented with whole clusters, a technique that adds spice, structure, and a slightly wild edge to the finished wine. It's a style built to showcase the grape's peppery, meatier side rather than pure ripe fruit.

The 2022 vintage is spice-driven, with green peppercorn, dried clove, olive brine, and a touch of menthol on the nose. The palate is bright and red-fruited, supported by supple tannins and a savory, balanced finish. It pairs well with grilled lamb kebabs, olive tapenade crostini, or aged pecorino.

92 Points
"Lively red and black berry fruits, sage, ground pepper, conifer, and cedarwood notes all emerge from the 2022 Syrah, a 100% Syrah that's all from the Perilune Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Not destemmed and brought up in neutral oak, it's medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, the more broad, rounded style of the vintage, and outstanding length. It’s another brilliant wine from winemaker Greg Brewer that readers will love."
