2023 Brewer Clifton - Chardonnay Santa Rita Hills (750ml)
Greg Brewer has spent three decades honing his craft in Santa Barbara County, with a particular devotion to the Sta. Rita Hills sub-appellation. He was instrumental in mapping and defining the AVA back in 1997, work that helped secure its official approval in 2001, and his contributions to the region later earned him Winemaker of the Year honors from Wine Enthusiast. Under the Brewer-Clifton label, Brewer's mission has remained consistent: to let each vineyard site speak clearly through wines made with precision and minimal manipulation.
This Chardonnay draws on fruit from four vineyards within the Sta. Rita Hills, 3D, Machado, Hapgood, and Perilune, each contributing its own imprint to the final blend. The 3D vineyard is planted predominantly to sandy soil across several Chardonnay clones, while Machado sits on rolling sandy clay loam near Clos Pepe, and Hapgood's richer soils carry the Mount Eden selection of Chardonnay. The wine spends nine months aging entirely in neutral oak, a choice that lets the fruit and site character lead rather than any overt oak influence.
The 2023 vintage is crystal-clear and energetic, opening with crushed citrus, oyster shell, and white flowers alongside a touch of salty minerality. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity, showing ripe golden apple and a hint of spice that build through a long, harmonious finish. Its bright, saline character makes it a natural match for grilled fish, fresh crab, or briny oysters.
