2023 Brown Estate - Chaos Theory Proprietary Red (750ml)
Brown Estate holds a distinctive place in Napa Valley history as the region's first Black owned estate winery, founded when the Brown family purchased land in the hills east of Rutherford back in 1980. They came to winemaking as farmers first, planting fifty acres amid 450 acres of rugged wilderness that they have always tended rather than tamed. The family debuted their own label in 1996 with Zinfandel, and over the decades built a reputation for expressive, small production wines that reflect both their farming roots and a genuine sense of creative curiosity in the cellar.
Chaos Theory began almost by accident, a one-off blend winemaker David Brown created for the winery's first participation in the Premiere Napa Valley trade auction. It made enough of an impression that the Browns brought it into the permanent lineup, though true to its name, the wine has never settled into a fixed recipe. Each vintage reworks the blend anew, typically drawing on a shifting mix of Merlot, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and other varieties sourced from Brown Estate and select Napa Valley vineyards, making every release its own distinct expression rather than a repeatable formula.
Chaos Theory typically shows an intense bouquet of ripe red fruit, dark cherry, and plum, layered with leather, wild herbs, and warm spice notes like clove and cinnamon. The palate is full and juicy, with a smooth, velvety texture and supple tannins carrying through a long finish. It pairs well with grilled short ribs, herb crusted lamb, or a hearty mushroom and barley stew.
