Steve MacRostie got his start in 1974 at Hacienda Winery, one of only a handful of wineries in Sonoma County at the time, before founding his own label in 1987. He built lasting relationships with respected growers like the Sangiacomo, Dutton, and Martinelli families, sourcing fruit from some of the region's best cool-climate sites. Winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen now works alongside Steve, continuing the winery's focus on balanced, elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

This Chardonnay draws on fruit from across the wider Sonoma Coast appellation, including Carneros and the Petaluma Gap, along with grapes from Steve's own Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. The wine sees barrel fermentation and aging, but the oak is applied with a light hand, meant to add texture and a whisper of spice rather than overt richness. The goal has always been balance over power.

The 2023 vintage shows green pear, apple blossom, and fresh lemon on the nose, with a pop of Meyer lemon acidity carrying flavors of tart pineapple and white flowers through a stony, mineral finish. It's a versatile white that pairs well with pan-seared trout, spring pea risotto, or a light appetizer spread.

93 Points
"Plenty of ripe, succulent fruit on a full body and a smooth, rounded texture. Applesauce, pineapple, brown butter and vanilla bean flavors give ample richness. Drink now. Screw cap."
