Massican was founded by Dan Petroski, a New York native who moved to Italy on something of a whim and fell for the region's crisp, saline white wines. He returned to California and became winemaker at Larkmead in Napa Valley, where he built a reputation for polished Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, all while nurturing Massican as a personal project dedicated to the Italian varieties he loved. Today it stands as Napa Valley's rare producer devoted entirely to white wine, drawing on Petroski's family heritage and his years spent learning winemaking abroad.

Gemina takes its name from an ancient grape once grown in the Massican hills of southern Italy, itself traced back to a Greek variety called Aminea Gemina in antiquity. The 2023 blend combines Greco, Falanghina, and Fiano sourced from small vineyard sites around Napa Valley, with each variety harvested and fermented separately before blending. The wine matures for six months in a mix of used French oak and stainless steel, finishing at a modest twelve percent alcohol.

The nose offers ocean spray, pear skin, and citrus zest, while the palate delivers lemon, lime, fig, and a touch of ginger over bright, saline acidity. It pairs beautifully with raw oysters, grilled branzino, or a spread of Italian antipasti.
