Vivier Wines was founded in 2009 by Stéphane Vivier, a Burgundy-born winemaker trained at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon who spent time working in Switzerland, Sonoma, and New Zealand before returning to Napa. In 2002 he became winemaker at Hyde de Villaine, the celebrated joint venture between Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Napa's Hyde family, an experience that shaped his precise, terroir-focused approach before he launched his own small-production label alongside his wife, Dana.

This bottling comes from Hyde Vineyard, planted in the coolest reaches of Carneros where fog and afternoon breezes off the Petaluma Gap extend the growing season and preserve natural acidity. Larry Hyde has spent decades experimenting with clonal selection and row orientation across the site, and Vivier's Chardonnay marks his first release from these vines since his years at Hyde de Villaine.

The wine offers layers of citrus and pear alongside baking spice and a distinct marine-tinged minerality, with clove notes lending extra dimension. Racy acidity keeps the palate lifted and fresh through a long, saline finish. Pair it with grilled halibut, buttery lobster, or a soft-ripened cheese.

93+ Points
"The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard comes from 30-year-old Wente vines, and the wine was matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. It has slowly unfolding scents of orchard fruit, oyster shell, bread dough, hazelnuts and floral perfume. The light-bodied palate is energetic! Its soft, rounded texture and delicate, mineral-driven flavors are complemented by racy acidity, and it has a long, ethereal finish. 318 cases were made. Fine-boned and youthfully shy, it will benefit from several years in the cellar."
