Mark Aubert began his winemaking career in 1989 at Peter Michael under the mentorship of famed consultant Helen Turley, a pedigree that carried him through stints at Colgin, Sloan, Futo, and Bryant Family before he and his wife, Teresa, founded Aubert Wines in 1999. That trajectory through some of Napa's most celebrated cult labels shaped his obsessive, detail-driven approach. Today Aubert is regarded as one of California's benchmark producers of vineyard-designate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with production kept intentionally small and distributed largely through an allocation list.

UV-SL takes its name from Ulises Valdez Sr., Aubert's late vineyard manager, and the Stoetz Lane property where he lived, one of the westernmost vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and only about six miles from the Pacific. Aubert and Valdez planted the site together nearly fifteen years ago, and despite the ocean's proximity, warm, sun-dappled afternoons let the fruit reach full ripeness even as cool marine air keeps acidity intact. The site is planted to both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on soils that lend the wines notable structure.

The 2024 vintage is deep and statuesque, opening with black cherry, mulberry, and star anise alongside a wild, chaparral-like herbal note distinctive to the site. Graphite and blonde tobacco add further layers, while firm, fine tannins and bright acidity carry through to a long, palate-staining finish. Its density and structure make it a natural match for grilled lamb chops or braised short ribs.

99 Points
"The 2024 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard is one of the standouts in the lineup. Raspberry coulis, evergreen, redwood, and sweet spice are accented by pronounced marine influence and striking salinity. The palate combines focus and verticality with notes of wild raspberry, sweet orange, and crushed volcanic stone. Energetic, layered, and exceptionally long, this brilliant Pinot Noir captures both the power and freshness of the site. Drink 2027-2047."
