2024 Cakebread - Sauvignon Blanc North Coast (750ml)
Cakebread Cellars was established in Rutherford in 1973 by the Cakebread family, and Sauvignon Blanc holds a special place in that history as the very first white grape variety they planted, set into the ground adjacent to the winery back in 1972. That original planting is still thriving today, and the wine remains a signature expression of the family's winemaking philosophy: approachable, food friendly whites built on bright fruit and balanced acidity. Dolores Cakebread's original vision for the wine, meant to complement lighter fare and fresh seafood, continues to guide the style of the North Coast bottling today.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyards across Napa Valley and the broader North Coast, including the family's own estate ranches in Carneros, Suscol Springs, Rutherford, and Calistoga. The cooler, southern reaches of the valley contribute bright citrus character and flinty minerality, while the warmer northern sites bring out riper, more tropical notes, and blending across these locations gives the wine its layered complexity. Grapes are harvested during the cool nighttime hours to preserve freshness, then whole cluster pressed to protect the wine's vibrant acidity and pure fruit character.
The 2024 shows pink grapefruit, Granny Smith apple, and kiwi, layered with honeydew, guava, and lemongrass. The palate is light bodied and dry, with balanced acidity carrying through to a lingering citrus finish. It pairs well with grilled fish, roast chicken, or a simple goat cheese salad.
