Brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, fourth-generation members of the famed Mondavi wine family, founded RAEN in 2013 after cutting their teeth at Continuum, the estate they helped build alongside their father, Tim, and grandfather, Robert. Carlo and Dante studied winemaking in France, Switzerland, and Italy before settling on the remote, windswept reaches of the far Sonoma Coast. The name RAEN stands for Research in Agriculture and Enology, reflecting a precise, farming-first philosophy the brothers apply across their small portfolio of single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Sea Field is a 4.8-acre monopole vineyard rising roughly 1,000 feet above the Pacific in Fort Ross-Seaview, planted on ancient marine soils over fractured bedrock. Persistent ocean wind and fog keep the site cool, driving natural acidity and restraining yields, while the vines are farmed organically and regeneratively. In the cellar, RAEN favors native-yeast fermentation, generous use of whole clusters, and aging in neutral French oak, a combination meant to preserve transparency and lift rather than add weight or overt oak character.

The 2024 Sea Field is powerful yet tightly coiled, layering dark-toned fruit with leather, cedar, incense, and dried rose petal. Underneath sits a core of crushed pomegranate, raspberry, and orange pith, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity giving the wine real length. This structured, aromatic style pairs well with duck breast, grilled quail, or a wild mushroom tart.

98 Points
"Aromas of seaweed, fresh and dried strawberries, salt and white pepper. Medium- to full-bodied, showing persistence, intensity and structure, with firm, muscular tannins. Long, lightly chewy finish. Needs three to four years to soften, but a solid wine. Best in 2028 and beyond."
