Inniskillin was founded on July 31, 1975, by Austrian-born, monastically educated winemaker Karl J. Kaiser and Donald J.P. Ziraldo, a Canadian of Italian winegrowing heritage, when the pair secured the first winery license granted in Ontario since 1929. Based at the historic Brae Burn Estate in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the winery has focused since its founding on producing serious wines from vinifera grapes grown across the Niagara Peninsula, and it has become the name most closely associated with Canadian icewine on the world stage.

The 2019 Gold Vidal Icewine comes from Vidal grapes, a hardy hybrid of Ugni Blanc and Seibel bred specifically to withstand harvest deep into winter. With temperatures dropping to negative ten degrees Celsius, the grapes were picked and pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery, then cold-settled for three days before fermentation in ninety percent new French oak at an average of fifteen degrees Celsius over sixteen days. The wine aged a further three months in oak before bottling, finishing with 272 grams of residual sugar and 10.5 grams of total acidity at 10% alcohol by volume.

Generous ripe fruit aromatics lead with peach, mango, and orange, giving way on the palate to apricot and citrus flavors layered with clove and a touch of vanilla. The wine carries real richness and unctuousness, yet a persistent freshness keeps it from turning cloying, with acidity lifting the fruit and a spicy, mouthwatering apricot note lingering on the finish.

"The 2019 Vidal Icewine comes in with 250 grams of residual sugar, 9.79 of total acidity and 9.5% alcohol. This was bottled in July 2020, the only bottling for this wine this year. The richest of the Vidal ice wines this issue, although only by a hair, this is intensely flavored and rather unctuous. As with its 2018 sibling, this has typical peach and apricot nuances. It shows off a lot of sugar. Part of that extra richness over the 2018 may be the perception created by this being a year younger, to be sure. For today, I like the balance on the 2018 better and give that the nod. This might well catch up in time. The difference between the two is not particularly great, despite rather different vintages."
