2023 Joseph Drouhin - Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche (750ml)

Maison Joseph Drouhin was founded in Beaune in 1880 and has been run by the same family for four generations since. In 1947 the house took over cultivation and vinification of the historic Laguiche family's vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet and Montrachet itself, a partnership that continues today and has become one of Drouhin's most celebrated calling cards among lovers of white Burgundy.

Morgeot sits on a gentle mid-slope in Chassagne-Montrachet, where the ruins of an old abbey still stand among the vines. The land was once split between monks and the Laguiche family, and the Laguiche portion survived the French Revolution intact. The soil here is marl over limestone, and the grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented and aged in oak barrels, where the wine develops its characteristic richness.

The wine opens with aromas of pear, orange oil, toasted bread and fresh mint, with a floral edge that lifts through the glass. The palate is medium to full bodied, satiny and layered, fresh and racy with real energy for a wine of this richness, closing on a long, saline finish. Serve it with seared foie gras, roast veal, or a firm sheep's-milk cheese.
