2024 Sophie Schaal - Pinot Noir (750ml)
Sophie Schaal, a Burgundy native and oenology graduate of the University of Dijon, joined her husband Julien's winemaking venture in 2013 before launching her own label in 2021. The couple splits their year between Alsace and South Africa, but their home base sits in the tiny village of Hunawihr, at the foot of the famed Clos Sainte-Hune vineyard. While Julien focuses almost entirely on Grand Cru Riesling, Sophie's range is broader, built around organic farming, natural fermentation, and a light touch with sulfur throughout.
This Pinot Noir is a blend of two old-vine parcels grown on predominantly limestone soils, which drain well while holding onto minerals that support deep root growth and balanced ripening. The vines are farmed organically, without synthetic chemicals or pesticides. Grapes are hand-picked, sorted carefully, and fermented naturally before ten months of aging in French oak, with no fining applied to keep the wine's aromatics intact.
The glass shows a bright red hue with garnet reflections, and the nose offers blackberry, black currant, and cherry with a whisper of vanilla. The palate is smooth and well-balanced, framed by soft, velvety tannins and a fresh finish. It pairs naturally with red meat, game, roast poultry, or Middle Eastern dishes like lamb tagine and couscous.
