Aalborg Taffel Akvavit Liqueur 700ml
Aalborg Taffel Akvavit was first distilled in 1846 by Isidor Henius, a Swedish-born distiller who settled in Denmark and introduced rectification, a refined distillation method, to Danish spirit production. The recipe has stayed largely unchanged since then, and the spirit went on to become Denmark's best selling akvavit, earning the nickname "Red Aalborg" for its label. It was named Best Aquavit in the World at the 2002 International Wine and Spirit Competition. Danish Distillers, the company long associated with the Aalborg name, closed in 2015, and production shifted to the Arcus distillery in Oslo, now under the Arcus Group.
Taffel Akvavit is distilled from grain neutral spirit and flavored primarily with caraway, the botanical that defines the traditional Danish style, along with supporting notes of dill, coriander, and orange peel. Unlike many other akvavits, it is bottled unaged or rested only briefly in neutral casks, which keeps the spirit clear and lets the caraway character come through without added wood influence. This clean, unaged approach is part of what distinguishes "taffel," or table style, akvavit from the darker, cask-aged versions found elsewhere in the category.
The spirit pours crystal clear, with an aroma dominated by bright caraway seed, lifted by faint citrus, fennel, and a touch of black pepper. On the palate it is dry and clean, showing caraway alongside lemon zest and a whisper of anise, before finishing warm and slightly peppery. It pairs traditionally with pickled herring, smoked fish, and rich, fatty meats from a Nordic cold table spread.
