Amarula Cream Liqueur 750ml
Amarula is produced by the Southern Liqueur Company, part of the Distell portfolio, and was first bottled as a clear spirit in 1983 before the cream version launched in 1989. The liqueur is built around the marula tree, a wild species native to the warm, frost-free regions of sub-Saharan Africa that cannot be commercially cultivated and grows almost exclusively in Limpopo province. Locally nicknamed the Elephant Tree for its popularity with wandering herds, and the Marriage Tree for its reputed aphrodisiac qualities, the marula holds deep cultural significance across the region, and the brand supports elephant conservation through the Amarula Trust.
Production begins each summer, typically between January and March, when ripe marula fruit is hand harvested by members of local communities. The fruit is washed, destoned, and pulped, then fermented into a marula fruit wine before being distilled twice in copper pot stills. The resulting spirit is aged for a minimum of two years in French oak casks, developing depth and complexity before it is finally blended with fresh dairy cream and a touch of sugar.
The result is a smooth, velvety liqueur with notes of vanilla custard, caramel, and dark chocolate, layered over the marula fruit's natural citrus tang and tropical, almost mango-like character. At 17 percent alcohol, it makes an easy after-dinner sipper. Serve it over ice, drizzled onto vanilla ice cream, or alongside a rich chocolate dessert.
