Asbach traces back to 1892, when Hugo Asbach, a native of Cologne who trained in brandy distilling both in Germany and France, founded his distillery in Rüdesheim am Rhein. The company built its reputation on Asbach Uralt, a barrel-aged brandy that became one of Germany's best known spirits and led to the coining of the term Weinbrand for German brandy after World War I restricted use of the word Cognac to French products. The brandy became closely tied to regional culture, most famously through Rüdesheimer Kaffee, a coffee drink created in 1957 by chef Hans Karl Adam that flambés Asbach with sugar before adding coffee and whipped cream. The Coffee Cream Liqueur was developed later as a bottled, ready to pour take on that same pairing, created through a collaboration between the distillery's cellar masters and professional baristas.

Asbach still operates its own winery and distillery in Rüdesheim, selecting wines for distillation and aging the resulting brandy longer than German law requires, first in Limousin oak and then in German oak, which gives the base spirit its deep topaz color. For the Coffee Cream Liqueur, that barrel-aged brandy is blended with coffee and cream to produce a lower proof, dessert style liqueur that carries the flavor identity of Rüdesheimer coffee in a single bottle.

The liqueur pours a rich, warm brown. On the nose, roasted coffee leads, backed by the brandy's vanilla and dried fruit character. The palate is smooth and full bodied, balancing bittersweet coffee against cream and a gentle oak warmth, finishing sweet and lingering. It's well suited to sipping after dinner, either on its own, over ice, or poured into coffee for an easy version of the classic Rüdesheim treatment.
