Branca Menta is produced by Fratelli Branca Distillerie, the Milan-based house that Bernardino Branca founded in 1845 after developing a bitter herbal formula in his home laboratory. The company remains family owned generations later, still guided by descendants of its founder, and has grown into an international producer while keeping its original recipes closely guarded.

Fernet Branca Menta was introduced in 1965 as an aromatic mint variation on the classic amaro. It starts from the same base as traditional Fernet, a grape spirit infused with a blend of herbs, roots, and spices, then reworked with the addition of essential oils from mint. The blend draws on essential oil from four types of mint, including prized Piedmontese mint, layered over the herbal backbone of the original formula.

On the nose and palate, Branca Menta opens with a cooling rush of fresh mint and spearmint before the deeper herbal, slightly bitter character of Fernet emerges underneath, rounded out by a faint touch of licorice. The result is a liqueur that feels lighter and more immediate than standard Fernet while still carrying real complexity and a lingering, refreshing finish.

"Nose: Aniseed sweetening to liquorish with time. Floating above this is mint and clean herbal aromas. Palate: Very clean; packed with peppermint, menthol and a punch of spice. Finish: Hard boiled peppermint sweets and gentle liquorish."
"The origins of this appropriately named mintier summertime version of Fernet Branca lie not with a canny marketeer, but a famous Italian singer, Maria Callas. The diva drunk her Fernet with mint (Fernet Branca alla menta) and being a fashion icon, so did many of her devoted fans."
