Chambord traces its story to the Loire Valley, where legend holds a black raspberry liqueur was served to Louis XIV during a visit to the Château de Chambord in the late seventeenth century. The modern brand took that tale as inspiration when entrepreneur Norton "Sky" Cooper developed and launched Chambord Liqueur Royale de France in 1981, building a commercial product around the château's name and its Renaissance-era mystique. It has since become one of the most recognizable fruit liqueurs on the market, easily identified by its round, gold-trimmed purple bottle.

Production begins with black raspberries, red raspberries, blackberries, and blackcurrants macerated in French spirits for several weeks to draw out their juice. The fruit is then pressed, and a second addition of spirit is used to extract further flavor before a final pressing. The resulting berry infusion is blended with cognac, Madagascar vanilla, citrus peel, honey, and warm spices, then adjusted by a master blender to reach the finished profile.

Chambord pours a deep purple-red and offers a fruity, jam-like sweetness balanced by real tartness from the berries. Vanilla, honey, and orange zest round out the aroma, while the cognac base lends subtle warmth and a light touch of oak beneath the fruit on the finish.

"Chambord is one sexy drink; just look at the bottle and the colour of the drink. It is a beautiful purple-red French liqueur made with blackberries, raspberries, Madagascan vanilla and Moroccan citrus peel, in a base of French XO Cognac. Apparently, it was inspired by a black raspberry liqueur that was made for King Louis the XIV on his visit to Chateau Chambord in the Loire Valley.

There seems to be a little confusion over the berries that are used in Chambord. Repeat after me: Chambord is made with raspberries and blackberries.
