Blue Curaçao takes its name from the Caribbean island where the style originated, though DeKuyper's version is produced in the Netherlands using distilled extracts of orange, lemon, and the Laraha fruit, a relative of the bitter orange grown on Curaçao and prized for its distinctive peel. The liqueur's vivid blue color comes from natural coloring rather than the fruit itself, since Laraha's bitter extract is naturally clear to pale. DeKuyper blends these citrus distillates with sugar to soften the bitterness, producing a liqueur made without high fructose corn syrup.
