Galliano was created in 1896 by Arturo Vaccari, a distiller from Livorno, Tuscany, who named the liqueur after Giuseppe Galliano, an Italian officer celebrated for his role in the Italo-Ethiopian War. Vaccari developed the original recipe in partnership with Fratelli Maraschi, a Torino company founded in 1888 and known today as Maraschi & Quirici, based in Chieri in the foothills of the Italian Alps. After changes in strength and formulation through the twentieth century, Lucas Bols acquired the brand in 2006 and worked with Maraschi & Quirici to restore Vaccari's original recipe and proof, a return reflected in the name L'Autentico.

The liqueur is built from more than thirty botanicals, including star anise, juniper berries, lavender, peppermint, cinnamon, musk yarrow, and Madagascar vanilla, sourced largely from the Mediterranean and the surrounding Alpine foothills. These are macerated in neutral beet alcohol across several separate infusion cycles, then distilled in small traditional copper pot stills reserved solely for Galliano production, before the distillate is infused with vanilla and blended to reach 42.3 percent alcohol by volume.

Vanilla leads the aroma, followed by waves of star and Mediterranean anise and a lift of citrus, with lavender and juniper adding quiet depth underneath. On the palate, anise and peppermint dominate initially, giving way to warm cinnamon, ginger, and citrus before a smooth, sweet vanilla finish.
