2018 Dow's - LBV Port (750ml)
The 2018 Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port concentrates ripe Douro Valley fruit and structured tannins from one of Portugal’s oldest continuous family producers, bottled ready to drink while retaining clear cellar longevity.
LBV Port differs from standard table wine by being fortified with grape spirit halfway through fermentation, then maturing in neutral Portuguese oak for four to six years. This extended wood contact softens the vintage’s natural acidity without stripping the signature dark fruit profile that distinguishes Dow’s lineup. Production traces back to 1798, establishing a methodology that prioritizes precision and balanced extract over heavy sweetness.
Tasting notes reveal an intense core of blackberry compote, stewed plum, and cocoa nibs, layered with subtle hints of licorice root and dried fig. Firm but integrated tannins provide structural support throughout the mid-palate, leading to a finish that echoes dark chocolate and toasted walnut. Residual sugar approaches 100 grams per liter, yet the 2018 harvest’s bright acidity keeps the impression fresh rather than cloying.
Serve at 60–65°F (16–18°C) to preserve aromatic volatility. Decant for 30 minutes before pouring, especially since LBV formats frequently skip sterile filtration. Food pairing targets contrast: age with sharp Cheddar or Roquefort, roast alongside peppered lamb chops, or accompany pecan tartlets and dark truffle fudge. Store opened bottles upright for two to three weeks; keep sealed stock horizontally in a stable 55°F environment where the vintage’s framework will continue integrating through the mid-2030s.
