2024 Robert Mondavi - Chardonnay Private Selection California (750ml)
Robert Mondavi built his reputation as one of Napa Valley's defining figures after opening his namesake winery in 1966, driven by a belief that California could produce wines to rival the world's best. The Private Selection line extends that vision into a more everyday, widely accessible tier, sourcing fruit from across California's varied growing regions instead of a single estate. Since I already covered Private Selection's Cabernet earlier in this batch, note that both wines share the same broader house style: approachable, fruit-forward, and made to pair easily with a wide range of meals.
This Chardonnay is sourced from prime vineyards along California's Central Coast, including the Paicines AVA and Monterey County, where cooler climate influences help preserve freshness and aromatic lift in the grapes. A small amount of aromatic Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is blended in alongside the Chardonnay, adding a subtle floral note to the finished wine. The wine is crafted using traditional techniques intended to build a round, creamy texture while keeping the fruit's natural brightness intact.
The nose offers key lime pie, honeysuckle, and pineapple, with hints of crème brûlée and vanilla bean. On the palate, baking spice and toasty oak carry through to a creamy, fresh finish. It pairs nicely with roast chicken, shrimp scampi, or a mild brie.
