High West Distillery opened in Park City, Utah, holding the distinction of being the state's first legal distillery since 1870. The company built its early reputation on blending sourced whiskeys from established distillers, developing a signature style that combined youthful spice with older, mellower stock. Double Rye reflects that philosophy directly in its name, marrying two straight rye whiskeys of markedly different character, and starting in 2018 the distillery began folding in more of its own house-distilled rye as that stock matured.

The blend pairs a bold, young rye sourced from MGP with a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley against a softer, more corn-forward rye distilled in-house at High West using roughly 80 percent rye and 20 percent malted rye. The whiskeys range from two to seven years old, and High West has stated that its own distillate always remains the minority share of the final blend. The two components are married and bottled at 92 proof without chill filtration, preserving the full range of flavors each brings to the mix.

The nose offers mint, clove, and licorice root layered with dark chocolate and a surprising touch of gin-like botanicals. On the palate, a sharp burst of rye spice softens into eucalyptus, ginger tea, and wildflower honey. The finish is warm and cinnamon-forward, fading into a final whisper of anise.

"Thanks to its balance of cinnamon, anise, and honey, High West Double Rye! stands on its own in cocktails, but is great served neat, with a little water, or on the rocks. Its spirited flavor fortifies classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. We recommend it for most occasions - sipping it in solitude by a campfire, savoring with favorite old friends, or sharing it with a good-looking stranger. "
