Kilkerran 8 yr Bourbon Cask Matured Single Malt Whiskey 750ml
Kilkerran is produced at Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, a site originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell after he left the neighboring Springbank distillery to strike out on his own. Glengyle closed in 1925 and sat silent for decades before Springbank's owners acquired it in 2000 and returned it to production in 2004. Because the Glengyle name was already used elsewhere for a vatted malt, the whisky itself takes its name from Kilkerran, drawn from the Gaelic name for the early settlement where Campbeltown now stands.
This release is matured entirely in bourbon casks for eight years, part of Kilkerran's limited core range that appears annually at cask strength. Bourbon wood tends to exert a lighter touch than sherry or other cask types, letting the distillery's oily, coastal spirit character come through more clearly. Bottled at 57.7% ABV, it is unchillfiltered and presented at natural colour.
The nose leads with butterscotch and custard cream, joined by apple butter, cream sponge, and poached pear. On the palate, shortbread crust and caramel chocolate meet gooseberry and white grape, with cigar box smoke and a touch of sandalwood developing. The finish carries green peppercorn and honeydew melon alongside a lingering ashy note.
