Stone's Original Ginger Liqueur 750ml

Stone's traces its roots back to 1740 and the founding of the Finsbury Distilling Company in the City of London. After an Excise Act in 1751 barred distillers from selling directly to the public, Finsbury built a retail network that included Joseph Stone, a High Holborn grocer, who put his name on the ginger wine he sold. The Stone family's ties to the company deepened when Joseph's son John later joined as an apprentice and rose to become one of its key salesmen. The brand's popularity surged in 1832 during a cholera epidemic, when ginger was widely believed to offer protection against the disease, and it has remained a fixture of British and Australian drinking culture ever since, today produced by the Finsbury Distillery Co. for Accolade Wines.

Stone's is made by infusing whole ginger root in high strength spirit before blending it with a base built from quality wine grapes and raisins, both gingered and ungingered, along with fortified neutral spirit. The result is bottled at around 13.5 percent alcohol by volume, following the same secret recipe the company has used for generations.

The wine pours a rich golden brown with hints of apricot and orange, and carries a bold, spicy ginger aroma. On the palate it delivers fiery root ginger balanced by honeyed sweetness, with subtle notes reminiscent of green apple skin adding a touch of freshness beneath the warmth. It is most famously mixed with whisky to make a Whisky Mac.
