Cento Fine Foods grew out of a South Philadelphia family grocery. Alfred Ciccotelli Sr., known as Mr. C, began selling imported Italian foods in the 1950s and started his own distribution company in the early 1960s, aiming to bring authentic Italian foods to neighborhood stores. His family later took the Cento brand to supermarkets in all 50 states, and the company is now based in West Deptford, New Jersey.

Cento’s paste is made in Italy from just three ingredients: salted anchovies from the Adriatic Sea, sunflower oil, and salt. The anchovies are ground into a concentrated paste, and a teaspoon delivers the flavor of about two fillets. It comes in a resealable tube, and it is gluten free, dairy free, and free of added sugar. Refrigerate after opening so it stays ready for later.

Deeply savory and rich in umami, this paste offers a piquant, salty depth that enhances a dish without overpowering it. The flavor is briny and concentrated, with a bright burst of the Mediterranean, and the consistency is smooth and easy to use.
