1990 H.M. Borges · Sercial Madeira

Region Madeira, Portugal
Producer H.M. Borges (founded 1877, 4th generation)
Grape 100% Sercial
Style Dry / Seco
Aging Aged in 650-liter American oak casks, decades in cask before bottling

One of Madeira's oldest independent houses, H.M. Borges has been crafting age-worthy island wines from its historic Funchal lodge since 1877. This 1990 Sercial — the driest of the classic Madeira styles, grown on the island's cooler north coast — was aged for decades in American oak before release, developing the variety's signature high-wire acidity and bone-dry finish. Expect orange peel, walnut, and honeyed notes layered over a backbone of piercing, saline freshness; true Sercial drinks more like a fine dry sherry than a dessert wine, making it a superb aperitif or pairing for hard cheeses and nuts. Built to last essentially indefinitely once opened, thanks to Madeira's unique oxidative, heat-cured production process.
