Isle Of Raasay Hebridean Gin Scotland 700ml
Isle of Raasay Distillery sits on the small Hebridean island of Raasay, just a short ferry ride from Skye, and holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery ever established there, on an island long associated with illicit distilling. Launched in 2019, the gin actually predates the distillery's whisky releases and is produced using bespoke Frilli stills fitted with a botanical chamber, allowing the same equipment to alternate between gin and whisky production.
The recipe combines ten botanicals, including locally grown Raasay juniper, rhubarb root, cubeb pepper, lemon and orange peel, coriander seed, angelica root, licorice root, and orris root, along with the distillery's own double-distilled spirit folded back into the mix. Juniper and a handful of other botanicals are distilled together in the copper still, while the rest are vapor-infused in a gin basket to preserve their brighter character. The gin is finished using water drawn from the distillery's historic on-site well and bottled at 46% ABV.
The nose is fresh and aromatic, opening with juniper, sweet orange, and candied lemon alongside a distinct hint of rhubarb. The palate turns dry, with juniper, tart rhubarb, and citrus notes eventually settling into a smooth, harmonious finish with lingering freshness. It makes a distinctive, zesty gin and tonic that showcases its island character clearly.
