Plymouth Navy Strength Gin 750ml

Plymouth Gin is made at the Black Friars Distillery, housed in a building on Plymouth's waterfront that dates to the early 1400s and once served as a Dominican monastery. Commercial gin production there began in 1793 under the firm of Fox and Williamson, later becoming Coates & Co, making it the oldest gin distillery in England still operating on its original site. The distillery's location made it a natural supplier to the Royal Navy, and Plymouth Gin became a fixture aboard British ships for well over a century, a connection that eventually gave rise to a stronger, navy strength expression built for life at sea.

Plymouth Gin is a protected style in its own right, distinct from London Dry, and both expressions share the same seven botanical recipe of juniper, coriander seed, sweet orange and lemon peel, angelica root, orris root, and cardamom. The botanicals lean more heavily on root ingredients than most London gins, giving the spirit an earthier, spicier character. For the navy strength version, the same base spirit and botanical blend are bottled at 57 percent alcohol by volume, the historic benchmark strength once used to confirm that a spirit could still ignite gunpowder if spilled on it.

The higher proof concentrates the gin's aromatics, with juniper leading over cardamom, coriander, and citrus peel, backed by a distinctly earthy, root driven depth. The palate is full and warming, balancing spice against a lingering, slightly bitter finish. Its intensity makes it a natural fit for a Corpse Reviver No. 2, and it holds its structure beautifully in a classic Gin and Tonic.
