2021 Zafeirakis - Limniona Tyrnavos (750ml)
Domaine Zafeirakis is a family estate in Tyrnavos, in the Thessaly region of central Greece, where the Zafeirakis family has farmed vines for more than a century. Christos Zafeirakis, the fourth generation to work the land, studied and trained in Italy before returning home in 2005 to plant the family's first organic vineyard. Since then he has focused much of his energy on reviving Limniona, a nearly forgotten indigenous red variety, first bottling it in 2008 after years of experimentation.
This Limniona comes from the Paleomilos vineyard, planted on sandy clay soil with a high concentration of flint at around 200 meters elevation, farmed organically and biodynamically with notably low yields. In the cellar, the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in wooden tanks, followed by an extended maceration of roughly twenty to twenty five days that helps build the wine's structure while preserving its naturally savory character.
The wine shows an earthy, savory nose of sage, dried mushroom, green olive, and sour cherry, carried through to a palate marked by mellow tannins, bright acidity, and a distinctive salty finish. It's a food-friendly red that pairs naturally with grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, or dishes built around olives and herbs.
