Alpha Estate was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis alongside Bordeaux-trained chemist and oenologist Angelos Iatridis, and the pair have since built one of Greece's most acclaimed producers, with the estate later named Wine Enthusiast's European Winery of the Year. Their 220 hectares of privately owned vineyards sit on the Amyndeon plateau in Northwestern Greece, the country's northernmost and highest-elevation zone for Xinomavro, ringed by three protective mountain ranges and moderated by two lakes that help extend the growing season.

Hedgehog is the estate's flagship single-vineyard bottling, named for the animals native to the site and sourced from a small block within Amyndeon planted in 2000 on sandy clay soil over limestone at nearly 700 meters elevation. Grapes are hand-harvested in small baskets and kept cool in transit before destemming without crushing, a gentle cold soak, and fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then rests on its lees for eight months before aging twelve months in partly new Allier oak and a further twelve in bottle.

Amyndeon's high altitude and wide day to night temperature swings give this Xinomavro a brighter, fresher character than warmer growing regions typically produce. Expect a light to medium ruby color with aromas of dried rose, cranberry, and red cherry, layered with sun-dried tomato, licorice, and a touch of spice. The palate is elegant with sleek tannins and a long, savory finish. It pairs well with grilled lamb, roasted pork, or hearty tomato-based dishes.

17 Points
"Planted on sandy and sandy-clay soil over limestone at 620–710 m. Hand-harvested 17 September. Destemming, light crushing, cold soak, alcoholic fermentation at gradually increasing temperatures, kept on lees for eight months with regular stirring. 12 months in Allier oak casks and 12 months in bottle. TA 6.12 g/l, pH 3.41.

Lightish ruby. Seductive and classic Xinomavro aromas of tangy red fruits – wild strawberry and cranberry – wild floral notes, without yet any of the evolved dried tomato character that is common in Xinomavro as it ages. Very slightly leafy. Mouth-watering freshness and tension from both the acidity and the fine yet definite tannins. The long finish is perfectly balanced between the dry tannins and succulent red fruits. Lovely wine and sure to become more complex and interesting with longer in the bottle. Could be challenging without food.
