The 2023 Alpha Estate Xinomavro PDO Amyndeon Single Vineyard "Hedgehog" has earned a devoted following as one of the most elegant and site-specific expressions of Xinomavro in Greece, a variety that rewards those drawn to the structured, aromatic complexity of Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir. The fruit comes entirely from the 17.93-hectare "Hedgehog" sub-region of the Amyndeon plateau in northwestern Macedonia, situated at 690 meters above sea level with a northern exposure facing Lake Petron and Mount Voras. The elevation produces a day-to-night temperature variation of 13 to 15 degrees Celsius, lengthening the growing season and preserving the freshness that is a defining signature of this vineyard. The vines are planted in sandy-clay soils over limestone, and grapes are harvested by hand into small picking baskets in early October.

In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and given a cold soak skin contact before controlled alcoholic fermentation at gradually increasing temperatures. The wine then spends eight months on its fine lees with regular stirring before 12 months of aging in French Allier oak casks of medium grain and white toast, followed by a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. The result is a bright purple-red wine with a complex nose of small red berries, leather, vanilla, pepper, and clove, with hints of ripe blackberry. The palate is full yet refined, with rounded tannins, balanced acidity, and well-integrated oak. Notes of tomato, roses, and forest floor add characteristic Xinomavro depth, with cherry, cranberry, and a cool, lasting freshness on the finish. Pair with roasted lamb, game, braised rabbit, or mushroom-forward dishes.

17 Points
"Light to mid garnet. Open and inviting aroma of dark-red fruit and wild, non-sweet red fruits, just slightly peppery and very pure. The oak is present but subtle and shows in a smoothing of the texture rather than an oaky taste or smell. Tannins are youthful yet already fine-grained – there’s real tannic finesse here. Bone dry, harmonious and likely to improve with a little more time in the bottle though the fruit is delicious now if that is how you prefer your reds. Just a slight impression of oak sweetness and spice on the finish but very subtle. GV for a wine with a long life ahead as well as being delicious now."
