2023 Skouras - Agiorgitiko Nemea Saint George (750ml)
George Skouras trained as a winemaker in Dijon and began his career in Cephallonia before moving to Nemea in 1986, where he founded his own estate and became one of the driving forces behind the modern Greek wine renaissance. Working from a state-of-the-art winery outside Argos, he crafts wines from both indigenous varieties, especially Agiorgitiko, and international grapes favored by the domestic market, building a reputation as one of the country's most respected producers.
Saint George is made entirely from Agiorgitiko sourced from vineyards in the Nemea region at roughly 2,132 feet of elevation, grown on clay soils from vines averaging around thirty years old. The wine is fermented and macerated in stainless steel before aging in used French barriques for twelve months, followed by a further six months resting in bottle, an approach designed to add structure and gentle spice without letting the oak overpower the grape's natural fruit character.
The wine shows a bright, deep morello cherry-red color and a nose of blackberry, raspberry, and ripe strawberry, layered with a touch of tobacco, clove, and cinnamon. The palate is medium bodied with elegant, ripe tannins and balanced acidity, finishing with notes of sweet vanilla and black pepper. It's a versatile pairing for roast duck, grilled meats, or aged cheeses.
