2024 Karamolegos - Assyrtiko Feredini (750ml)
Artemis Karamolegos built a small family wine cellar on Santorini in the 1950s, never anticipating that his grandson, also named Artemis, would one day grow it into one of the island's largest and most dynamic wineries. The estate today farms parcels across some of Santorini's most storied wine villages, working almost entirely with the island's flagship grape, Assyrtiko, which thrives in the volcanic soils that give Santorini wine its distinctive character.
Feredini is made from Assyrtiko with smaller portions of Athiri and Aidani, using classic white winemaking under controlled temperature. Like other Santorini vineyards, the fruit comes from old, ungrafted bush vines trained low to the ground in the traditional kouloura basket shape to protect them from the island's constant wind, growing in volcanic soil largely untouched by phylloxera. After fermentation, the wine rests on its fine lees for about a month, a relatively short maturation meant to preserve freshness and immediacy.
The wine pours a pale straw color and opens with fresh citrus, white peach, and a touch of dried sage, framed by the palpable saline minerality that defines Santorini's best Assyrtikos. The palate is bright with lively acidity and a round mouthfeel, finishing with a satisfying burst of citrus and wet stone. It's an easy match for grilled fish, shellfish, or classic Mediterranean seafood dishes.
