Mitravelas is the oldest modern winery in Nemea, founded in the early 1900s by two Mitravelas brothers and still run by the family today. Nemea itself is one of Greece's oldest wine regions, with Agiorgitiko even earning a mention from Homer, and the estate has built its reputation on showing the many faces this native grape can take, from age-worthy barrel-aged bottlings to fresher, more immediate styles like this one.

Red on Black is made from selected Agiorgitiko grown in the hills surrounding the Nemea plain, without any oak aging. After destemming, the grapes are inoculated with yeasts selected specifically from the Nemea region and undergo a short, relatively low-temperature extraction before malolactic fermentation completes the process. The approach favors freshness and immediacy over structure, giving drinkers a clear look at the grape's natural fruit character.

The finished wine shows a red-violet color with aromas of cherry, gooseberry, and pomegranate, joined by warm spice and a touch of caramel. The palate is soft and juicy, with smooth, approachable tannins and a bright, fruity finish, best served slightly chilled. It pairs naturally with gyros, souvlaki, grilled octopus, or a classic moussaka.
