2024 Zafeirakis - Malagouzia Tyrnavos Microcosmos (750ml)
The Zafeirakis family has farmed in the shadow of Mount Olympus near Tyrnavos for more than a century, historically selling their grapes to the local cooperative. That changed when Christos Zafeirakis, the fourth generation to work the land, returned home in 2005 after completing an oenology degree in Milan and gaining experience in Tuscany, Piedmont, and Alto Adige. He became the first in his family to bottle wine under their own name, converting the estate to organic farming and growing it to roughly 8 hectares, all while remaining fixated on the clay and flint soils he considers the heart of the domaine's identity.
Microcosmos is a single-vineyard Malagousia sourced from the Paleomylos site, planted with vines now approaching twenty years of age. The grapes are harvested in three separate passes to capture varying degrees of ripeness, then fermented with native yeasts and aged entirely in stainless steel, with only a minimal amount of sulfur added at bottling to preserve the wine's natural character.
The wine shows a lemon-green color with golden highlights and a layered bouquet of fresh apple, pear, peach, and apricot, rounded out by citrus and lemon blossom over a subtle mineral undertone. On the palate it is refined and medium-bodied, with a light oiliness balanced by sharp acidity and a long, saline finish. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled shrimp, or lightly spiced Asian dishes.
