Blue Spot 7 yr Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey 750ml
Blue Spot completes the historic Spot range created by Mitchell & Son, the Dublin wine merchant whose tradition of marking bonded casks with a dab of colored paint gave the whole family of whiskeys its name. Introduced in 2021, Blue Spot reunited the full Spot lineup, alongside Green, Yellow, and Red, for the first time in more than 56 years, reviving a piece of Dublin whiskey history that had remained out of production for decades. It is produced at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, with master distiller Kevin O'Gorman overseeing its reintroduction as the youngest member of the Spot family at seven years of age.
Blue Spot is a single pot still whiskey made from malted and unmalted barley, matured for a minimum of seven years across three cask types: bourbon barrels, sherry butts, and Portuguese Madeira casks. The Madeira casks are a particularly distinctive element, coopered in Jerez and seasoned for three years with sweet Tinta Negra wine before use, a step that sets Blue Spot apart from its siblings in the range. Unlike the other Spot expressions, Blue Spot is bottled at cask strength, meaning its ABV varies from batch to batch rather than being fixed at a standard proof.
The nose offers pineapple, kiwi, and green banana alongside pot still spice, baked apple, and toasted wood, with the Madeira influence bringing a cooked fruit sweetness. On the palate, clove and cracked black pepper meet vanilla, cinnamon, and nutty oak, finishing with a lasting balance of exotic fruit and spice. Given its strength and richness, it makes an excellent base for a whiskey Old Fashioned, and a splash of water in a simple whiskey and soda also opens up its fruitier notes.
