2020 Marcarini - Barolo La Morra (750ml)
Crafted by the fourth generation of the Marcarini family, this 2020 Barolo La Morra isolates the distinct character of La Morra’s magnesium-rich calcareous clay soils. The Nebbiolo vines cultivate at elevations between 300 and 380 meters, where Tortonian-derived earth naturally yields wines with lifted aromatics and a lighter structural frame than heavier Langhe counterparts. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel through a weeks-long submerged cap maceration, preserving vibrant fruit compounds before the wine enters up to 24 months of maturation entirely in large Slavonian oak barrels ranging from 10 to 50 years old.
The resulting 2020 vintage presents a garnet red hue with a deliberate medium build and finely polished tannins. Bright acidity anchors the mid-palate, allowing the wine to deliver immediate drinking satisfaction while retaining documented capacity to develop secondary complexity over the next decade. Rather than masking the vineyard site with heavy wood influence, the extended bottle rest prior to release ensures seamless integration and precise tannic extraction.
Tasting notes reveal concentrated layers of violet, dried rose, and ripe cherry, interwoven with secondary aromas of orange peel, brown sugar spice, and damp red soil. On the palate, these aromatic elements transition into focused red berry flavors balanced by a savory, mineral-driven finish. Suggested food pairings include slowly braised veal, earthy wild mushroom risotto, or nutty aged Toma cheese to harmonize with the wine’s tannic structure and crisp acidity.
