The 2021 Bastianich Schioppettino Friuli Rosso IGT highlights the aromatic profile of Schioppettino, a red grape indigenous to the hills of eastern Friuli. Founded in 1997 by Lidia Bastianich and her family to reconnect with their regional roots, the estate manages twenty-seven hectares of vineyards in the Colli Orientali del Friuli. The grapes come from vines roughly twenty years old planted on calcareous marl soil, locally called ponca, which benefits from a microclimate moderated by cool Alpine winds and the Adriatic Sea. These conditions result in a bright ruby wine with violet highlights.

Schioppettino, alternatively known as Ribolla Nera, delivers spiced fruit characteristics rooted in black pepper, red berries, and plum. On the palate, the 2021 vintage offers a soft and supple experience with zesty acidity and flavors of blueberry and wild fruit. Fine, well-integrated tannins lead into a savory finish accented by licorice notes. With 13.5% alcohol, the winemaking process prioritizes the preservation of the variety's natural spice and structural lift.

Recommended Food Matches

  • Roasted meats and game dishes align with the wine's spicy depth and tannic texture.
  • Aged cheese selections complement the savory licorice finish and zesty acidity.
