The 2021 Cappellano Barolo Pie Rupestris captures the structural depth and aromatic precision of Serralunga d’Alba’s historic Gabutti cru through five generations of uninterrupted family stewardship. Cultivated organically and grafted onto resilient American rootstock, the estate’s Nebbiolo vines produce concentrated fruit balanced by the valley’s distinctive schist-rich minerality. After careful destemming, the grapes undergo extended fermentation and maceration with indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur additions. Prolonged aging in large, neutral botti precedes an unfiltered bottling that safeguards the vineyard’s raw character and firmly knit tannic framework.

This vintage presents a powerful, classically structured palate marked by dense dark cherry, dried plum, and crushed violet. Secondary bands of graphite, wild licorice, and sun-baked clay weave through a full-bodied medium, while tightly packed tannins drive toward a remarkably elongated finish that slowly releases savory nuances of cured leaf, tobacco, and damp forest floor. The pronounced acidity and muscular grip demand patient cellaring, rewarding multi-year ageability with gradual integration and deeper complexity. Pair this robust Piedmontese wine with slow-braised beef or lamb, earth-driven preparations like wild mushroom risotto, or truffle-infused dishes that mirror its woodland profile. It also holds its own against aged pecorino, Manchego, or heavy charcuterie where its solid tannic spine cuts cleanly through rich fats.

"The 2021 Barolo Rupestris is a total knockout. Dark, ample and beautifully layered, the 2021 dazzles from start to finish, showing excellent depth and tons of persistence. The 2021 is one of my favorite recent vintages because of its superb balance. Although obviously a young Barolo, opening this with minimal cellaring won't be an issue. It's a pretty big wine from Cappellano. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on
our database as NR.
