Sourced from the historic Santo Stefano cru within Neive’s Albesani vineyard, this 2021 Castello di Neive Barbaresco delivers the precise balance of Piedmont’s most respected Nebbiolo terroir. Planted on southeast-facing slopes of Tortonian marl and limestone, the vines produce a medium-full bodied red engineered for layered development and long-term cellaring.

The 2021 vintage emerged from cool nights and an extended growing season, resulting in exceptional fruit purity and structural control. The translucent garnet wine opens with dried rose petals, wild cherry, tar, iron, and anise, gradually revealing dried tobacco, orange zest, and forest floor. On the palate, electric acidity and firm yet silk-lined tannins carry a long, mineral-driven finish. Enjoy now through 2045, with peak drinking years spanning 2028 to 2038.

Suggested food pairings: Barbaresco’s signature acidity and structured tannins cut through richness while complementing earthy, savory flavors. Traditional Piedmontese preparations shine alongside this wine, particularly slow-braised oxtail, wild boar ragù, and roasted squab. The aromatic complexity also anchors heartier dishes like wild mushroom risotto, truffle-cut spaghetti, and firm aged cheeses including Parmigiano-Reggiano and Castelmagno. Avoid heavily sweet or spicy fare, which masks Nebbiolo’s delicate floral and mineral backbone.

Serving guide: Keep bottles upright for 24 hours before opening to stabilize sediment. Pour into wide carafes or glasses and decant for at least 120 minutes to allow the tightly wound tannins to soften and aromatic compounds to oxidize fully. Serve at 64–68°F to highlight both the primary fruit and secondary earthy nuances. Store unopened bottles horizontally in a stable environment away from direct light and vibration.

94+ Points
"Deceptively medium in body, the 2021 Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano packs a pretty serious punch. Readers should plan on cellaring this for at least a few years, as it needs time to come into its own. Bright acids and beams of supporting tannin shap..."
