The 2021 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Branella delivers precision-driven red wine craftsmanship rooted in Abruzzo’s coastal-influenced foothills. Farmed biodynamically in Torano Nuovo since 1964, the estate’s ancient vines and patient cellar methods define every bottle. This release originates solely from the two-hectare Branella parcel, purchased in 1981 and planted with Montepulciano vines dating back to 1966. A gentle southeast aspect and sandy, mineral-rich soils force deep root growth, producing concentrated fruit with restrained alcohol levels.

Hand-picked clusters are carefully destemmed and subjected to a seven-to-eight-day gentle maceration before spontaneous fermentation begins in temperature-controlled cement tanks. Pump-overs are skipped entirely to maintain soft extraction, and the wine rests for roughly twenty-four months in the same cement vessels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. This hands-off approach preserves the natural acid structure and native aroma profile.

Aroma layers of grilled rosemary, dried black cherry, violet, and autumnal spice unfold over a core of ripe plum and blue berry. Fine-grained tannins bridge a saline backbone that carries flavor through a long, staining finish. Allow the bottle to rest upright for a few days, then decant for thirty minutes to soften early grip before pouring. The wine ages gracefully for three to eight years and pairs best with braised meats, roasted game, or firm aged cheeses that match the savory depth and bright acidity.

95 Points
"The 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne Branella is spicy and floral, with a smoky burst of grilled herbs and autumnal spice complementing dried black cherries. This is elegant and seamlessly silky, with depths of dark red and blue fruits that slowly saturate. All is underscored by saline minerals as a coating of grippy tannins emerges toward the close. It finishes with staining length and concentration, leaving bitter blackberries and violet inner florals to resonate on. The 2021 will be released in 2025. It's shaping up to be an epic and powerful rendition of Pepe's Vigne Branella."
