2022 Piaggia - Toscana Rosso IGT Pietranera (750ml)
The 2022 Piaggia Pietranera Toscana IGT delivers structured Tuscan complexity through an 80 percent Sangiovese and 20 percent Cabernet Franc blend cultivated on dark, stone flecked ground just outside Florence.
Estate founder Mauro Vannucci established Piaggia in 1990 to capture the ambitious character of Carmignano, one of Italy’s oldest designated wine regions. The approximately 15 hectares across Santa Cristina a Mezzana and Poggio a Caiano benefit from proven drainage and heat accumulation patterns that support steady ripening cycles. Harvested grapes ferment on natural yeast colonies and transfer to French oak barrels for a resting period of twelve to eighteen months. Winemakers extend or shorten this phase based directly on the structural demands of each specific harvest year.
This vintage opens with an intense bright ruby red body and noticeable violet reflections along the glass edge. Primary aromatic threads feature cooked forest berry reductions, soft baking spices, dried thyme leaves, and roasted cocoa. The middle palate registers considerable substance with evenly distributed tannic grip, leading into a prolonged exit that balances mild fruit sweetness against vibrant cherry and plum acids.
Serve paired with aged cheese wheels, high fat roast preparations using beef or red meat cuts, and spiced venison or wild game dishes. The wine’s solid extract and herbal lift actively cleanse the palate between heavier protein bites.
