Tenuta di Capezzana is one of Italy's oldest wine estates, with a history said to reach back to 804 AD. Owned by the Contini Bonacossi family, the estate sits in the Carmignano zone of Tuscany, northwest of Florence, and is known for both its wines and its olive oils. Capezzana is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of Barco Reale.

Barco Reale di Carmignano comes from vineyards in the municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato. Carmignano is a small, highly regarded appellation and the only one in Tuscany that requires Cabernet in the blend with Sangiovese. This 2023 is built mainly on Sangiovese, joined by Cabernet and Canaiolo, from organically grown fruit. The wine sees no barrel aging, so the fruit stays front and center.

Intense ruby with purplish tones, the wine offers crushed cherries, wild berries, and red plum, along with sweet sage and a touch of spice. A crisp mineral streak adds a steely edge to its inner sweetness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with firm, precise tannins, finishing fresh and herbal. Lively and well-defined, the 2023 is a bright, approachable Tuscan red.
