Sergio Manetti bought Montevertine in Radda in 1967 and made his first wine in 1971. He became one of Tuscany’s great rebels, pulling out of the Chianti Classico appellation in 1981 when its rules required white grapes in the blend. His son Martino now runs the estate, and the namesake red remains a benchmark for pure, traditional Sangiovese. It comes from vineyards about 425 meters up on marl and alberese limestone. The blend is 90% Sangiovese with small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino. It’s fermented in cement with a long maceration, aged two years in large Slavonian oak casks, and bottled unfiltered. Expect red cherry, pomegranate and blood orange, with rose petal, licorice, cinnamon and a graphite-like minerality. The palate is lively and full, with supple tannins and a long, earthy finish. Superb now with bistecca or game, and it will age gracefully for decades.

95 Points
"The Montevertine 2023 Montevertine is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino. This is a very pretty and elegant wine with a bright, vertical delivery and delicate aromas of blue flower, violet and small berry fruit. The wine remains fine and graceful throughout, showing lovely precision and freshness. With vinification and aging in cement and large oak casks, some 23,000 bottles were made."
