Pian del Ciampolo is the most approachable wine from Montevertine, Sergio Manetti’s legendary Radda estate, now run by his son Martino. It’s made with the same care as the estate’s famous Montevertine and Le Pergole Torte. The fruit comes mainly from a 1.5-hectare parcel replanted in 2003, plus younger vines from the estate’s top sites. It’s 90% Sangiovese with small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino. Like all the estate’s wines, it’s fermented in cement, aged in large Slavonian oak casks and bottled unfiltered. Expect wild strawberry, sour cherry, violets and rose petals, with a hint of smoke. The palate is juicy and crunchy, with lively acidity, firm tannins and a spicy finish. A perfect pizza, pasta or roast chicken red that also ages well.

93 Points
"The Montevertine 2024 Pian del Ciampolo is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Colorino, with vinification and aging in cement and large oak casks. A little reduced at first, the wine needs some time to open, revealing bright redcurrant, blueberry, violet and iris. It has a punchy, vertical delivery with a silky, lean-bodied style and fine, accessible tannins. This is bright and energetic, although it probably needs a little more time to flesh out. Production is 26,000 bottles."
