Fernet-Branca has been produced in Milan since 1845 by Fratelli Branca Distillerie, founded by Bernardino Branca and still family-owned today. What began as a digestive tonic marketed to treat ailments ranging from fever to cholera grew into a global spirit, expanding into Argentina in 1907 and later becoming a fixture on American bar shelves after it was classified as a medicinal product during Prohibition, allowing it to remain legal while other spirits were banned.

The amaro is built from a secret blend of 27 herbs, roots, and spices sourced from four continents, with confirmed or widely cited ingredients including gentian root, myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, saffron, and cinchona bark. Rather than being distilled, these botanicals are macerated directly into a grape-based spirit to extract their oils and flavor compounds, and the resulting liquid then rests in oak barrels for at least a year, a step that mellows its sharper edges and adds subtle notes of vanilla and wood. The finished amaro is bottled at 39% ABV.

The color is a deep, coffee-like brown, with an intensely spiced aroma dominated by menthol, especially on the finish, alongside orange peel and chamomile. The palate is assertively bitter and herbal, built on bark and spice rather than sweetness, with only faint fruit notes peeking through. It's traditionally taken neat or chilled as a digestif, though it also anchors classic cocktails like the Hanky Panky and Fernet con Coca.
