Italicus was created by Italian bartender Giuseppe Gallo, who based the liqueur on a historic rosolio di Torino recipe dating to the 1800s, a category once favored among Italian nobility. Gallo launched Italicus commercially in September 2016 at London's Savoy Hotel, reviving a nearly forgotten style of Italian aperitivo and drawing inspiration from childhood memories of Amalfi Coast flavors along with the country's broader artistic and culinary heritage. The liqueur is produced at Torino Distillati, a family-owned distillery in Moncalieri near Turin that has operated since 1906.

Italicus is built around bergamot oranges from Calabria and citrons from Sicily, whose peels are hand-pressed in cold water through a traditional technique called sfumatura, extracting essential oils without heat to preserve their delicate aromatics. These citrus elements are combined with a curated set of Italian botanicals, including Roman chamomile, lavender, gentian root, yellow rose, and lemon balm, infused into neutral grain spirit. The finished liqueur is bottled unaged at 20 percent alcohol by volume.

The nose leads with bright bergamot and lemon zest, followed by a gentle floral lift of chamomile and lavender. On the palate it carries citrus and grassy herbal notes balanced by light sweetness, with a subtle bitterness from the gentian root lingering through the finish.
