G. E. Massenez Creme de Cassis Liqueur 750ml
Distillerie G.E. Massenez traces its roots to the 1870s, when Jean-Baptiste Massenez began distilling in the Val de Villé at Urbeis, in Alsace. His son Eugène inherited both the family trade and his father's expertise, later becoming a recognized master distiller in his own right. In the following generations, Gabriel Eugène Massenez built connections with Michelin-starred chefs in the 1950s, helping place Massenez spirits on restaurant lists across France, and in 1979 opened a new distillery in the Val de Villé that passed to her daughter Manou in 1982. The house remains one of the last family-owned firms dedicated to traditional, top-quality eaux-de-vie and crèmes.
This crème de cassis is made in the Dijon style from fully ripe blackcurrants sourced from the Burgundy region, chosen for their concentrated flavor and aromatic depth. The fruit is slow-macerated in a neutral grape spirit to draw out color, essential oils, and nuance, then sweetened with a notably high dosage of sugar, around 400 grams per liter, roughly double what a standard liqueur carries, to reach the richer "crème" designation. No barrel aging is used, keeping the focus on the pure, vibrant character of the blackcurrant itself.
In the glass it shows a deep ruby color with slightly bluish red highlights, made dense by its sugar content. The nose is clean and true to blackcurrant, with no stray notes, and notably intense and persistent. On the palate it delivers immediate smoothness and a burst of fruit, with a fragile sweetness that gives way to a touch of acidity at the finish for balance.
