Hovding Norwegian Aquavit Liqueur 750ml
Høvding comes from Det Norske Brenneri, The Norwegian Distillery, based in Grimstad on Norway's southern coast. Founded in 2011 by Odd Johan Nelvik and Stig Bareksten, following the 2005 dissolution of the country's state alcohol production monopoly, it became Norway's first private distillery in more than eighty years. The name, meaning "chief" in Norwegian, nods to the leadership of Viking tribes and situates the aquavit within the country's long spirits tradition.
Production follows Norway's official aquavit denomination of origin, established in 2011, which requires a base of 100 percent Norwegian potato spirit flavored with caraway or dill and aged in oak for at least six months. Høvding is copper pot distilled and aromatized with a wide botanical mix, including caraway, coriander, star anise, fennel seed, citrus peel, and licorice, then rests for a minimum of eight months in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, which lend it a rounder, more oxidative character than younger, unaged styles.
The nose opens with caraway alongside orange peel, apple skin, and a light touch of vanilla. On the palate it is soft and well-rounded, carrying flavors of dried fruit and apricot alongside subtle baking spice, finishing long and elegant with lingering warmth from its time in oak.
